|Oaxaca Learning Center|
The core activity of the Learning Center is its free tutoring and mentoring program, which is primarily for junior and senior high school students. The Center has two locations in downtown Oaxaca where ten university student tutors offer 150 hours of one-on-one or small-class tutoring each week.
Our students seek help primarily in mathematics (80% of all tutoring), but we also offer tutoring and classes in chemistry, physics, Spanish composition, computer literacy, and English as a foreign language as well as other subjects as needed.
Students come to the Center initially for help with their homework. Our methodology has proven effective in moving students from the rote learning and memorization taught in Mexican schools to an analytic understanding of the subject matter.
The result is an awakening of intellectual curiosity in academic subjects and increased ability to apply the knowledge gained. Engaging our students in the learning process builds self-confidence and expands their aspirations for a better, more secure life.
Tutoring support is almost entirely lacking in local public schools or in other resource organizations, other than fee-based businesses. We are proud that our tutors’ dedication has enabled hundreds of poor students to realize their academic and personal potential.
