Outreach Program

In June 2007, we were able to open a satellite tutoring center in Las Lomas de San Jacinto. Las Lomas is a low-income neighborhood of just one paved street and few municipal services, high in the hills on the fringe of the city.

The new center was initially funded through the end of 2007 with a government grant of just under $11,000 US dollars. Activities began with a summer school session and continued with the tutoring of 32 students - 22 young women and 10 young men.

The community provided the Center with a rent-free facility, and the whole center staff pitched in to help to paint, wire and plumb the building for student use.

Because state regulations don’t allow the direct renewal of grants, there is a six-month gap between applying for a new grant and actually receiving funding in July 2008. The Center covered the operating costs for January and an anonymous donor has covered the costs from February through June 2008.

"The Learning Center has been supportive in the subject that is complicated for me, and thanks to their assistance I will be able to achieve better marks. The tutors offer good support, they teach well, they listen well, and they know how to explain so we can better understand."
- Osiris Monserrat Pérez Nieto

"To be present at the Learning Center is a big support, not only for school subjects, but for everything. It is a very calm place where I can find people I can trust and help me feel good. I give thanks for the help that they offer to me."
- Judith Alejandra Cue Torres
