Developing Leaders

The Oaxaca Learning Center provides financial support to needy and highly motivated students who have consistently participated in Learning Center programs. These students are in danger of dropping out for financial reasons. Some come to us because they need funding in order to continue in school.

Presently we have thirteen beneficiaries—selected junior and senior high school students—who receive a stipend and spend fifteen hours weekly at the Center in supervised study. This is a way for promising but poorly prepared students to devote more time to their studies instead of having to work
long hours or leave school entirely. They have the opportunity to broaden their academic skills and, for the first time, are encouraged to read and analyze the thoughts of others. They learn to work and solve problems in a group setting.

The Center’s tutors, coordinators and a psychologist also provide career counseling support for students along with workshops in study skills so that they can perform successfully at the high school and university level. As they complete high school, our leadership training activities help prepare those who wish to take on more responsibilities at the Center.
