Program: English Classes
![]() English language classes have been offered for a number of years. Over time, the program has expanded in size and scope and now is comprised of three parts: group classes, individual tutoring, and intercambios (hour-long sessions which enable English speakers to practice their Spanish and our students to enhance their abilities in English). See also Volunteer Opportunities for more detail.
|
The size of the program varies from season to season based on the number of volunteers available from English-speaking countries. Our volunteer teachers (who are sometimes fluent in Spanish) often have professional experience in teaching English as a second language. Our English curriculum has been modified over time and now embodies teaching objectives, course materials and evaluation procedures. The Center has also received a grant from the Oaxaca Lending Library Foundation to provide some basic textbook materials for our teachers and students.
In addition to offering group classes, the Center recruits volunteer tutors who meet individually with students once or twice a week to accommodate both student and volunteer schedules. These exchanges usually run for sixty to ninety minutes each. Our students and volunteer visitors also can practice their English/Spanish skills in a series of intercambios. Many of these sessions take place at the Center, but others meet at a time and place chosen by the participants. We encourage you to volunteer in this program when you are in Oaxaca. |
